The US president said he wants the Persian nation to prosper, but that he cannot aspire to possess a nuclear weapon. He also spoke about the possibility of a military operation: “Many people want to take this step, but I don’t.”
US President Donald Trump asserted Thursday that he is “close” to reaching a nuclear deal with Iran and reiterated that Washington ‘s prerequisite is that Tehran “does not have a nuclear weapon.”
From Doha , as part of his tour of the Middle East , Trump said during a meeting with investors that, according to the latest reports, “ Iran appears to have accepted the terms ” of a possible agreement.
“They’re not going to produce what I colloquially call ‘nuclear dust’ (enriched uranium),” he stated. “I sincerely wish them prosperity, that they become a great nation. But they can’t have a nuclear weapon. That’s the only point.”
The president insisted that he is “very close, perhaps, to reaching an agreement” without resorting to violence, an option he said he wants to avoid.
” Some people, many people, want to take this step (violence), but I don’t, I don’t want to. So we’ll see what happens . We are in very serious negotiations with Iran for a long-term peace, and if we achieve it, it will be fantastic,” he added.
This refers to the Iranian position expressed by Ali Shamkhani , a senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on political, military and nuclear issues, who in statements to the American broadcaster NBC said that his country is willing to get rid of its reserves of highly enriched uranium, which can be used for military purposes.
According to Shamkhani , Iran would enrich uranium to the minimum levels necessary for civilian use and, if there is an agreement, would also allow international inspectors to oversee the process, all in exchange for the US lifting all economic sanctions against Iran.
“The contradictory positions of US authorities on the nuclear program are hampering nuclear negotiations between the parties ,” Tehran said.
Iran and the United States began nuclear talks on April 12, after Trump called on Tehran to negotiate a deal and threatened a military strike if it failed to reach an agreement on its nuclear program.
Washington and Tehran have held four rounds of nuclear talks, the last one last Sunday in Muscat, Oman , where they agreed to continue negotiations, although they have not yet announced the date and location of the next meeting.
In Wednesday’s interview with NBC , Shamkhani expressed concern that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might try to derail the process through unofficial pressure in Washington .
” If the Americans eliminate the Bibi effect (as Netanyahu is known), they will be able to sign the agreement easily ,” Shamkhani said .
Negotiations in Türkiye
Trump also said Thursday that he is still considering traveling to Turkey to participate in the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine aimed at ending the three-year conflict.
Trump indicated in Qatar that, if conditions were right, he could attend the meeting next Friday.
” If something happens, I would go on Friday if it’s appropriate ,” he said. The Republican president emphasized the importance of these negotiations and said the United States could contribute to a “psychological” change that would benefit the peace process.
It’s worth remembering that upon taking office, Trump promised to end the war immediately, but Russia rejected his proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, backed by the United States and Ukraine.
